Seeds to Stories – Incredible Edible Springhall
By Pam Warhurst
“We’d been going about six months when COVID hit and our gatherings were put on hold. We were incredibly happy to be the first Incredible Edible group in Calderdale to be based at a doctors surgery, planting fruit trees and making raised beds, with about forty people from across the community coming to our growing sessions and community meals in this part of Halifax. Some of the group made a bench for weary diggers, others funded a hosepipe to keep our edibles quenched.
Young people here were thinking about their CommUnity kitchen and sharing the ‘how to cook’ ideas from the kitchen tables back home.
Then months of lockdown.
Last Sunday was our first revisit to our foodie surgery to take stock of what needs doing and to get us all growing together again. Some stuff had managed to survive, like the fennel, chard and the odd spring onion. The carrots we’d planted proved to be stars of the day and the radish seeds will go well with the other seeds we got in the Incredible Edible Seeds to Stories pack to kick off the season.
We learn so much from each other and the food we share is delicious. We’re also really proud to be one of the Incredible Edible groups showing how to rethink what our health services could do, using surgery grounds to help everyone see where good food comes from, how to grow and nurture it ourselves and how it helps to grow and nurture us.”
Best wishes from Incredible Edible Springhall, Halifax, West Yorkshire.
