Incredible Edible Clapham’s Wonderful Bandstand Beds
By Sarah Ward
Recently Pam spent some time with Incredible Edible Clapham on their Green Route and here is what she thought of the amazing Bandstand Beds
A two hundred mile train journey to plant out some Cavolo Nero may seem a bit mad, but being with David, Wendy and the Bandstand Beds volunteers was worth every mile.
This amazing group around which the Clapham Edible route wends its way, are an inspiration far beyond the boundaries of Clapham Common.
They have their own identity and back story, but their values and aspirations are one and the same as Incredible Edible. To inspire and support all in the place they call home ,to invest in conversations and through those help us all realise our own potential to come together and build a kinder future.
Nigel the councillor, Will the Burnley supporter, his dad Dan who told me they were travelling to Burnley on Sunday to see Burnley FC thrash Manchester United, dozens of local folks, planting, laughing, sharing a cuppa and making me feel ever such a tad jealous of those two foot high broad bean plants in the polytunnel or the courgettes being planted out in a warm soil months ahead of my sad little seeds in Todmorden.
And then there’s Tom. He is in the picture of the BB Library. A book exchange to add to the growing and now the container kitchen, part funded by volunteers, part by the local business improvement district and ideal for teaching those lost arts of pickling and bottling not to mention, cake and coffee.
And as ever, so much of this is down to the handful of individuals, particularly David and Wendy who care enough to offer their gifts over the months and years to take this patch on the Common from bare soil to food oasis.
More from the edible route soon.
